On March 20, COTE MER presented its Fall/Winter 2026 collection at Rakuten Fashion Week Tokyo.

This season’s theme, “REBORN FROM VINTAGE,” centers on the idea of reinterpreting the time and memories embedded in past garments through a new perspective.

Rather than treating vintage as mere material, COTE MER has consistently approached it as a “cultural archive.” What emerges through its process of reconstruction is not simply remade clothing, but new value and narrative—in essence, a philosophy of “value transformation.” This season, that philosophy was expressed with greater clarity and visual intensity than ever before.

A Fusion of Traditional Japanese Culture and Streetwear

Many of the looks on the runway were composed of boldly reconstructed elements derived from traditional Japanese textiles such as kimono and obi. Gold threads, embroidery, florals, cranes, and wave motifs were patchworked together and transformed into jackets, trousers, and coordinated sets.

These pieces went beyond “Japanese-inspired design.” The structural rhythm created by re-editing fragments of fabric, along with the visual tension generated by contrasting patterns, brought a distinct sense of realism aligned with contemporary streetwear.

Reconstruction as a Statement of Uniqueness

The fusion with modern materials such as denim, leather, and military fabrics was equally striking. Denim jackets incorporating vintage textiles as paneling, and outerwear combining leather with traditional Japanese patterns, conveyed a strong sense of one-of-a-kind presence.

This approach stands in contrast to mass production, while simultaneously responding to the growing demand in today’s fashion market for individuality and storytelling. By embedding history within each garment, COTE MER presents pieces that resonate deeply with the identity of the wearer.

Balancing Street and Mode

Silhouettes leaned toward relaxed, wide fits, reflecting a strong streetwear influence, while tailored jackets and suits introduced elements of structured, mode-driven design.

In particular, suit styles featuring traditional Japanese patterns blurred the boundaries between formal and casual, offering new possibilities for contemporary styling.

A Collection at the Intersection of Past and Future

For COTE MER, which advocates the fusion of fashion and art, garments are vessels that carry the time and memories of the past, while reconstruction is an act of giving them new meaning. This philosophy was more vividly visualized through this season’s collection.
