On July 12, Condé Nast announced the appointment of Rocco Liu as the new editorial director of Vogue China. Liu, who was most recently editorial director of GQ China, will take over the position of Margaret Zhang, who stepped down in February of this year to oversee editorial direction and content for Vogue China.
Liu graduated from Beijing Foreign Studies University with a bachelor’s degree in English Language and Literature Translation. After that, he joined Condé Nast China in 2009, starting his career as an editor for the newly launched GQ. Since then, Liu has held several key positions, including head of GQ Lab and social media director. In 2020, he was appointed acting editorial director and given the official title in 2021.
Under Liu’s bold leadership, GQ has grown into one of the most popular and influential lifestyle media brands in China. Liu led GQ’s digital transformation and established the iconic public account “GQ Lab” on WeChat. He successfully expanded “GQ Lab” to emerging social content platforms such as Xiaohongshu and Bilibili. Additionally, he founded the GQ video team and oversaw high-profile events like GQ’s flagship Men of the Year event.
Condé Nast’s Chief Content Officer and Vogue’s Global Editorial Director, Anna Wintour, conveyed the following message in a statement: “I have long admired everything Rocco has done at GQ. He has great instincts for creating stories that live on new platforms, that find new audiences, and for imagining events that get people talking. In all the work he’s done with us, he’s been super creative, ambitious and has proven that he knows how to make an impact. I’m thrilled and excited that he’s joining the Vogue team.”
Since its launch in 2005, VOGUE China has established itself as the foremost authority on fashion in China. Currently, the media reaches over 34 million readers across print, digital, and social channels in China, and it is published under a licensing partnership.
