Rohit Bal

On November 1, it was announced that Rohit Bal, one of India’s most iconic fashion designers, had passed away at 63.

Rohit Bal was a visionary who deeply respected India’s traditions while transcending them with innovative designs that garnered global acclaim. His collections featured motifs inspired by the natural beauty of lotus flowers and peacocks, which became symbolic trademarks of the Bal brand. Through luxurious fabrics and meticulous embroidery, he vividly brought India’s rich culture and history to life.

Bal’s grand, dramatic fashion shows were another highlight of his career. More than mere displays of clothing, his shows combined storytelling and art, captivating audiences and creating an immersive experience.

In addition to fashion, Bal extended his creative genius into interior design and accessories, demonstrating his multifaceted talent. His work celebrated India’s heritage, yet possessed a timeless, universal allure that continues to inspire countless individuals worldwide.

In response to Bal’s passing, Sunil Sethi, Chairman of the Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI), issued the following statement:

“I have known ROHIT BAL, whom we all lovingly call ‘Gudda’ for more than three decades, his passing away will leave a void in the fashion design space forever. Everyone admired him for his attention to detail, how beautifully his lotus bloomed on modern shapes and his understanding of what modern women desired. Rohit changed the lexicon of fashion! He was the front runner in more ways than one— he led from the front, his clothing withstood the test of time and tide — just like him.”

Rohit Bal’s passing marks a tremendous loss for the Indian fashion world, yet his legacy of artistry and innovation will undoubtedly be carried forward by future generations of designers and fashion enthusiasts.
