These features are designed to provide personalized assistance to consumers while enhancing flexibility and security in payments through expanded Google Pay functionalities.

Transforming In-Store Shopping with Google Lens

For in-store shopping, Google has introduced enhanced functionality through Google Lens. With this update, consumers can simply snap a photo of a product in-store to instantly access information such as competitive pricing, stock availability, and customer reviews.

This innovative feature is powered by advancements in AI image recognition technology and Google’s extensive database of over 45 billion product listings. According to research, 72% of U.S. consumers use their smartphones while shopping in-store, and more than half report leaving stores empty-handed due to uncertainty. Google’s new feature addresses this gap, empowering shoppers with the confidence to make informed decisions on the spot.

Initially, this functionality will be available for categories like beauty products, electronics, and toys in stores that share inventory data with Google. Consumers can experience the feature by tapping the Lens icon in the Google app.

Google is also bridging the gap between online and local shopping with a new feature in Google Maps. Shoppers can search for specific items, such as a “holiday sweater,” and quickly locate nearby stores carrying the product.

This convenient functionality supports various categories, including clothing, home goods, and groceries. It offers a seamless shopping experience, allowing users to search online while making purchases directly in-store.

This feature is expected to roll out across the U.S. in the coming weeks and is poised to become a critical tool for driving foot traffic to stores during the holiday season.

Enhancing Flexibility and Security in Payments

In addition to these new shopping features, Google is expanding its payment options to improve flexibility and security. The company is broadening its “Buy Now, Pay Later” (BNPL) offerings by adding Afterpay to existing options Affirm and Zip, with Klarna integration coming soon.

Google is also extending its virtual card functionality to Discover cardholders, providing added security for online transactions by concealing card numbers during purchases.

Furthermore, Google plans to pilot a new service to combat fraudulent transactions. This service aims not only to block unauthorized transactions using stolen financial information but also to resolve false positives where legitimate transactions are mistakenly flagged as fraud. These enhancements ensure a safer and more seamless transaction environment for both consumers and businesses.
