On January 15, Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez, the co-founders of the luxury brand Proenza Schouler, announced that they will step down as creative directors on January 31, 2025. After 22 years of leading the brand, which has grown into an iconic presence in the New York fashion scene, this decision marks a major turning point for the duo.

Proenza Schouler was established in 2002 as a senior thesis project at Parsons School of Design. Their talent was quickly recognized when Barneys New York purchased their entire collection, propelling them into the spotlight. Since then, the brand has earned a reputation for bold silhouettes, artisanal details, and timelessly edgy designs, solidifying its place as a cornerstone of New York Fashion Week.

Over the years, the brand has received numerous accolades, including the CFDA Perry Ellis Award for Emerging Talent in 2003, and the CFDA Womenswear Designer of the Year award in 2007, 2011, and 2013. Known for their experimental yet loyal adherence to the brand’s codes, McCollough and Hernandez’s designs have been adored by fashion icons such as Chloë Sevigny and Michelle Obama. Among their many achievements, the launch of the PS1 bag in 2008 stands out as a groundbreaking fusion of functionality and style, elevating Proenza Schouler’s global recognition as a leading luxury brand.

In a statement to WWD, McCollough and Hernandez reflected on their journey, saying, “Proenza Schouler has always been a deeply autobiographical story, one that has evolved, developed, and grown up alongside us, a reflection of our lives over the last two decades.” They explained that the brand’s 20th anniversary in 2022 was a moment of profound reflection, leading them to the decision to step away from their day-to-day roles.

Following their departure, the duo will remain shareholders and members of Proenza Schouler’s board of directors. Together with CEO Shira Suveyke Snyder, they are actively searching for a new creative lead, ensuring a seamless transition for the brand. Snyder has assured that the brand’s operations will “continue without interruption.”

Speculation has also grown regarding the duo’s next chapter, with strong rumors suggesting they may take the helm as creative directors of the Spanish luxury brand Loewe. However, no official announcements have been made at this time.
