The prestigious French department store Printemps is set to make a grand entrance into the U.S. market with the highly anticipated opening of its first American flagship store on March 21, 2025 in the heart of Wall Street, New York. The new store, located inside One Wall Street along Broadway, spans 55,000 square feet, with 40,000 square feet dedicated to two floors of retail space. Designed as a sophisticated experiential destination where fashion, hospitality, gourmet dining, and culture converge, Printemps New York aims to bring a breath of fresh air to the city’s retail scene by seamlessly blending 160 years of heritage with modern innovation.
A New Retail Model Beyond the Department Store Concept
Printemps New York distinguishes itself from traditional department stores with an innovative retail model. Unlike conventional stores that rely on shop-in-shop formats, Printemps directly curates and manages all products in-house, allowing for a fluid and dynamic shopping experience tailored to contemporary consumer preferences.
“Printemps New York is not a department store. It’s a space that blends shopping, dining, experiences, culture, and services in an immersive and dynamic way. A seamless integration of French curation and American hospitality,” said Jean-Marc Bellaiche, CEO of Printemps.
He further commented on the company’s bold expansion into the highly competitive New York market, saying: “We are approaching the New York market with humility. It’s an extremely competitive landscape, but our vision for Printemps is truly one-of-a-kind.”
Architecture & Design: Blending History with Modern Elegance
The architectural design of Printemps New York was envisioned by renowned French architect Laura Gonzalez, who masterfully fused Art Deco influences with contemporary design elements. The result is a harmonious balance between historic grandeur and modern sophistication.
“Inspired by Printemps’ history, we incorporated mosaics, stained glass, patterns, and original artwork. However, this is a new story in New York—here, anything is possible.,” Gonzalez explained.
The store’s most iconic space is undoubtedly the Red Room. This striking area boasts a 33-foot-high ceiling in the grand Art Deco style, adorned with intricate mosaic designs crafted by Hildreth Meière in the 1920s. At its center sits a circular onyx table, where luxury footwear from Dior, Aquazzura, and Bottega Veneta is elegantly displayed. The Red Room is a seamless blend of art, architecture, and fashion, offering an unparalleled shopping experience.
Printemps New York will offer a meticulously curated selection across multiple categories, including men’s and women’s prêt-à-porter, casual wear, outerwear, vintage fashion, activewear, accessories, beauty, wellness, and gifts.
The store’s featured brands include JW Anderson, Jacquemus, Jean Paul Gaultier, Manolo Blahnik, Aquazzura, Balenciaga, Nike, Acne Studios, Simone Rocha, Carven, and Jil Sander.
Additionally, several brands will make their New York debut, including Joseph Duclos, Pinel & Pinel, Pascal Mathieu, Capulette, Maison Ernest, and Taller Marmo.
Dining Experiences Covering One-Third of the Store
One of Printemps New York’s defining features is its commitment to gastronomy, dedicating one-third of its retail space to dining experiences. Renowned chef Gregory Gourdet, a three-time James Beard Award winner and Top Chef finalist, oversees the store’s culinary offerings, which include the following dining destinations:
- Maison Passerelle: A fine-dining experience that merges French culinary heritage with influences from Haiti, West Africa, and Vietnam, offering a truly unique menu.
- Champagne Bar: A sophisticated lounge serving champagne and non-alcoholic cocktails.
- Café Jalu: A casual all-day café for shoppers on the go.
- Salon Vert: A Parisian-style oyster bar overlooking Broadway.
- Red Room Bar: A cocktail lounge set against the backdrop of New York’s latest interior landmark, the Red Room.
A Commitment to Sustainability & Future-Focused Design
Sustainability is at the core of Printemps New York’s philosophy. The store introduces the Atelier & Repair service, allowing customers to restore and preserve their cherished items rather than replacing them.
In addition, the store’s furniture incorporates eco-friendly materials, including vintage pieces sourced from French flea markets and tabletops made from recycled plastic waste from the fashion industry. This commitment to circular design reflects Printemps’ broader mission to redefine sustainable luxury.
A Bold Entry into the New York Market
Printemps’ venture into the U.S. is not without precedent. In 1984, the brand opened a licensed store in suburban Denver, Colorado, but the store closed after three years. This time, however, Printemps is taking a radically different approach, positioning itself as a next-generation retail experience that seamlessly integrates fashion, dining, culture, and hospitality.
At a time when traditional department stores in the U.S. are struggling with declining sales and evolving consumer behaviors, Printemps New York emerges as a beacon of change. Its debut is not merely another store opening—it represents a revolution in luxury retail. With a meticulously curated blend of history and innovation, Printemps New York is poised to reshape the way people experience shopping in New York City.
Excitement continues to build as the March 21 grand opening approaches, marking the beginning of a new era in luxury retail.
