On May 20, Google announced at its annual developer conference, “I/O 202,5” that it is partnering with South Korean fashion eyewear brand Gentle Monster as the first official collaborator on a new generation of AI-powered smart eyewear equipped with Android XR.

This marks the first official project featuring Google’s Android XR platform in a wearable device and signifies a groundbreaking move toward the seamless fusion of fashion and technology.

Where Design Meets Technology — A Strategic Collaboration with Gentle Monster

Shahram Izadi, Vice President of Google’s XR division, emphasized the importance of creativity and emotionally resonant design in making technology feel natural in everyday life. He stated, “To truly integrate technology into people’s daily lives, design that speaks to creativity and emotion is essential.”

Chosen as the official partner, Gentle Monster is a global brand known for its avant-garde aesthetic and innovative approach to eyewear design. Renowned for pushing the boundaries of conventional eyewear, the brand blends elements of spatial art, performance, and product design into a singular, visionary narrative.

From Gadget to Lifestyle — The Evolution of Smart Eyewear

Through this project, Google aims to create AI smart eyewear that pairs “all-day wearability” with “exceptional design.” With fashion and technology coming together more seamlessly than ever, smart glasses are poised to evolve beyond functional gadgets into refined lifestyle items.

Following the announcement at “I/O 2025,” the upcoming release — blending Gentle Monster’s futuristic artistry with Google’s cutting-edge AI and XR technologies — is already drawing widespread attention from across the fashion and tech industries alike.
