On June 5, Seiko, a brand with over a century of watchmaking heritage, unveiled a new timepiece that once again fuses traditional Japanese aesthetics with cutting-edge horological innovation. Scheduled for release on Friday, July 11, the new Presage Classic “Unglazed Arita Porcelain Dial” Limited Edition will be available in just 1,200 pieces worldwide, priced at £1,650 (approx. $2,236). This finely crafted model highlights the pinnacle of Japanese artisanal skill and offers a fresh perspective on craftsmanship to watch enthusiasts both in Japan and abroad.
Innovation through Unglazing: A New Aesthetic Brought by Arita Porcelain
The standout feature of this model lies in its unglazed Arita porcelain dial—a technique being introduced for the first time in the Presage collection. Unlike traditional porcelain that is coated with a glassy glaze, this unglazed finish showcases the true, matte texture of porcelain itself, lending the dial a warm, organic quality. Sharp, angular ridges and a contemporary interpretation of the traditional diamond-shaped kikkō motif, long considered a symbol of good fortune, bring refined depth and subtle shading to the watch face.
This innovative approach was made possible using a functional ceramic clay developed by the Saga Prefectural Ceramics Research Center. The material is not only highly durable and resistant to staining, but also enables the delicate beauty of porcelain to shine through, uniting practicality with artistry.
Born from the Hands of Master Craftsmen
The creation of this model is the result of a collaboration between two master artisans from “Shingama,” a renowned kiln in Arita. Overseeing the project is Hiroyuki Hashiguchi, a certified traditional craftsman and one of Japan’s leading experts in porcelain painting. He is the founder of “Seikashou,” an evolved version of the kiln’s signature “Seika” style, and is widely acclaimed for his refined and sophisticated decorative techniques, both in Japan and abroad.
The lead artisan in charge of production is Toshiaki Kawaguchi, team leader at Shingama. A skilled expert in all stages of porcelain making—from molding and glazing to firing—Kawaguchi’s exceptional craftsmanship earned him the “Saga Monozukuri Bito” award in 2020, recognizing his significant contributions to traditional manufacturing in Saga Prefecture.
Bridging over 400 years of Arita porcelain tradition with modern innovation, their combined expertise and vision have brought to life a one-of-a-kind unglazed porcelain dial—unprecedented in its elegance and craftsmanship.
Complementing the matte white dial is a glossy black calf leather strap, which further enhances the watch’s sense of quiet luxury. The strap is made from sustainably sourced leather, produced by a tannery certified by the Leather Working Group (LWG), reflecting Seiko’s commitment to environmentally responsible manufacturing.
A serene yet powerful timepiece that embodies true craftsmanship while offering everyday practicality. This summer, why not adorn your wrist with the Presage “Unglazed Arita Porcelain Dial” — a genuine embodiment of Made in Japan excellence?
