L’Oréal Refutes Reports of Hong Kong Office Closure and Mass Layoffs

French beauty giant L’Oréal has officially denied recent media reports claiming it will shut down its Hong Kong office and lay off over 200 employees, calling the information “inaccurate.”

Last week, several Hong Kong media outlets reported that L’Oréal was planning to merge its Hong Kong operations with its mainland China division, resulting in large-scale layoffs. According to these reports, affected employees would gradually depart by the end of September, with some being transferred to the company’s Guangzhou office. Despite the company reportedly remaining profitable, severance packages were described as “relatively generous.”

In response, L’Oréal China told Chinese media outlet The Beijing News that “The recent media report regarding L’Oréal Hong Kong’s job cut information is inaccurate.” The company added, “We continuously evaluate and optimize our organization structure, both locally and globally, to ensure it adapts to the evolving market ecosystem and changing consumer expectations.”

Furthermore, L’Oréal stated that it is transitioning to a new organizational model designed to foster greater synergy and mutual benefits between its Hong Kong and mainland operations. “The new organisation combines the strengths and expertise of both markets, particularly Hong Kong’s retail excellence and Mainland China’s strong capabilities in digital and e-commerce,” the company said.

L’Oréal Hong Kong was established in 1983 and has been operating in the region for nearly four decades. The company currently employs approximately 300 people, excluding retail staff.

Globally, L’Oréal’s business is structured into four divisions: Professional Products, Consumer Products, L’Oréal Luxe, and Dermatological Beauty. Its portfolio includes leading brands such as Kérastase, Lancôme, La Roche-Posay, and Yves Saint Laurent Beauty.

The company continues to see strong growth potential in the Chinese market. Vincent Boinay, President of North Asia and CEO of L’Oréal China, remarked during a conference held in Shanghai in April 2025, “The numbers are getting better and the target of 5% is not only the target for Chinese growth this year, but also the target of L’Oréal in China.”
