Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon and one of the world’s wealthiest individuals, is once again at the center of media buzz. This time, it’s not about the extravagant three-day wedding in Venice—reportedly costing over $46 million—but what might come after.
As the lavish ceremony’s glamour continues to capture headlines, a new and unexpected rumor has emerged: that Bezos is planning to buy Vogue magazine as a wedding gift for his new wife, Lauren Sánchez.
Fueling the speculation was Sánchez’s recent appearance on the digital cover of Vogue. She wore a custom wedding dress by Dolce & Gabbana, hand-picked by none other than Dame Anna Wintour. Adding to the intrigue, Wintour recently announced her resignation as Vogue’s Editor-in-Chief after 37 years, though she continues to serve as Condé Nast’s Chief Content Officer and Global Editorial Director.
The timing of these events has raised eyebrows across the fashion industry, with many questioning whether there’s a larger move happening behind the scenes.
According to a report by the Daily Mail, Bezos is not just eyeing Vogue, but is allegedly considering the acquisition of its parent company, Condé Nast. If true, this would make Bezos the owner of one of fashion’s most influential media empires.
What’s more, Wintour herself is rumored to be playing a key role in the negotiations. As reported, “Anna is said to be the one brokering the deal so that’s why Lauren was put on the cover. Anna has equity in the business so has a lot to gain from a sale.”
While Wintour has stepped down from her editorial role, she remains deeply involved in Condé Nast’s leadership. However, a source close to Bezos has reportedly dismissed the rumors as “completely untrue.”
That said, Bezos is no stranger to the publishing world. In 2013, he famously acquired The Washington Post, ending the Graham family’s long-standing ownership of the newspaper.
Commenting on the current speculation, one insider noted: “He’s one of the very few people with deep enough pockets. And Lauren is no airhead. She’s a sharp cookie. There have been conversations.”
Condé Nast, meanwhile, remains a privately held company under Advance Publications, owned by the Newhouse family since 1959. The company has consistently denied any plans to sell its portfolio of brands. Still, recent developments—including global layoffs and the closure of Vogue’s Hanover Square office in London, now relocated to a modest WeWork space—have only intensified industry speculation.
Is Bezos truly preparing to present Vogue as a wedding gift? Is Anna Wintour orchestrating the transition behind closed doors? And ultimately, who will control the future of one of fashion’s most iconic publications? As rumors continue to swirl, the industry watches closely for what may come next.
