Cartier Unveils Its Largest Flagship Boutique in Asia in Tokyo’s Ginza

On September 19, French luxury maison Cartier celebrated the grand opening of its new flagship, the Cartier Ginza 4-Chome Boutique, in Tokyo. Embodying the spirit of the iconic Panthère, the boutique boasts the largest total floor area in Asia and introduces Japan’s first-ever “La Résidence.” As only the fifth of its kind worldwide, this exceptional space brings together Cartier’s unparalleled savoir-faire and cosmopolitan sensibility, creating a truly one-of-a-kind destination.

A Design Where Japanese Culture Meets French Elegance

The design of the Cartier Ginza 4-Chome Boutique radiates originality from exterior to interior, harmonizing Japanese artistry with French refinement.

The façade was designed by Klein Dytham Architecture (KDa), following their work on the Cartier Shinsaibashi Boutique. Inspired by the traditional Japanese motif Seigaiha (blue ocean waves), the geometric pattern contrasts the linear architecture of Ginza with a graceful curvilinear form. Resembling a jewel box, the exterior conveys depth and height, inviting visitors into Cartier’s refined universe.

Inside, the boutique was brought to life by architect Bruno Moinard and his agency Moinard Bétaille, who have overseen Cartier interiors since 2002. Blending materials such as washi paper, natural wood, and stone with French elegance, the design embodies Cartier’s distinctive world—where light and shadow, tradition and modernity coexist in harmony.

Floor Layout and Artistic Highlights

Each floor of the boutique offers a unique atmosphere, unfolding like chapters in a story.

First Floor showcases jewelry, watches, accessories, and fragrances. Its defining feature is an art wall created by washi artist Eriko Horiki, depicting a Panthère strolling through a forest. Crafted from four layers of handmade washi, the work reveals shifting depths and transparency as it catches the light. Origami-inspired ceiling details and natural wood reminiscent of traditional Japanese homes add warmth, while Versailles-inspired parquet flooring affirms Cartier’s French heritage. A Quick Care Service Bar, designed with orchid-petal motifs symbolizing prosperity, offers a blend of convenience and luxury.

Second Floor is dedicated to diamonds and bridal creations. The ceiling, reminiscent of kites in flight, combines curves and elliptical forms in playful harmony. Decorative panels featuring ginkgo leaves—symbols of vitality and peace—introduce a seasonal nuance. In the “Salon Japonesque,” works by artist Ryo Hikosaka are displayed, inspired by a 1907 Cartier diamond brooch featuring abstract geometric motifs. Echoing the Seigaiha wave pattern, the design evokes rippling water and the brilliance of diamonds.

Third Floor features Cartier’s signature jewelry and watches alongside a dedicated fragrance area. The ceiling draws inspiration from the iconic Trinity ring, with flowing curves that infuse the space with softness and lightness. Guests are welcomed into the Peacock Salon and the Jardin, a dreamlike environment of light and shadow that engages the senses with tranquility and richness. The boutique also offers personalization services, where red boxes can be embossed or wrapped in front of clients, delivering a uniquely tailored experience.

Fourth Floor houses La Résidence, a luxurious private setting befitting Cartier’s stature. A ceiling reminiscent of traditional Japanese umbrellas and a verdant garden create a serene ambiance that silences the city’s bustle. In the Grand Salon, furnished with dining tables and sofas, the garden view resonates with the interior carpets to achieve visual harmony. The “Tutti Frutti” Salon features a plaster art wall crafted by Atelier Del Boca, long-time collaborators of Cartier. The piece depicts a Panthère perched atop a cherry tree, gazing across Mount Fuji and Tokyo, infusing the space with a singular presence.

Special Exhibition: Cartier Collection

To mark the opening, the boutique is hosting a special exhibition from September 19 to October 19. Under the theme Panthère and Fauna, 11 rare pieces from the Cartier Collection are being displayed.

By merging tradition with innovation, the Cartier Ginza 4-Chome Boutique adds a new radiance to one of Tokyo’s most iconic districts. More than a boutique, it represents a new landmark that connects the maison’s storied history to its vision for the future.
