Saks Off 5th to Close Its Upper East Side Flagship on December 31

Saks Off 5th

Saks Off 5th, a longtime pillar of shopping culture on New York’s Upper East Side, will close its flagship location on East 57th Street on December 31, 2025.

The brand—known for offering high-end designer labels at accessible prices and for defining the idea of “discount luxury”—has been a popular destination for both locals and visitors seeking designer pieces at a better value.

A Strategic Shift Across 10 U.S. Stores

The closure is part of a broader strategic realignment intended to reallocate resources toward stronger-performing locations and high-potential markets. In addition to the Upper East Side flagship, nine more U.S. stores will close in phases beginning in early 2026:

  • Austin, Texas
  • Chicago, Illinois
  • East Hanover, New Jersey
  • Niagara Falls, New York
  • Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
  • Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (including Franklin Mall)
  • Plymouth Meeting, Pennsylvania
  • Washington, D.C.
  • West Hartford, Connecticut

Regarding the restructuring, the company issued the following statement: “We are confident this will better position the Saks Off 5th business for long-term success and look forward to continuing to deliver for our customers.”

When bankruptcy rumors surfaced in October, the company also clarified: “It is important to note that a restructuring is not being contemplated. Moreover, we are making strong progress to reduce outstanding payments, invest in our transformation and drive improved performance.”

Saks Fifth Avenue Main Flagship Remains Open

The iconic Saks Fifth Avenue flagship in Midtown Manhattan is unaffected by the outlet closures and will continue operating as usual. Since opening in 1924, the flagship has maintained a central place in New York’s fashion landscape and remains celebrated for its holiday window displays.
These changes apply strictly to the outlet division and do not impact the main Saks brand.

Chelsea Piers Fitness Moves Into the 57th Street Site

Meanwhile, the building at 135 E. 57th St., where the Saks Off 5th flagship currently resides, is undergoing a significant redevelopment led by TF Cornerstone.

After Saks Off 5th vacates the space, Chelsea Piers Fitness will move in with a 47,000-square-foot facility. The brand already operates several New York locations, and the new opening aims to meet the growing wellness demand within the Upper East Side.

The building is also slated for conversion into approximately 350 residential units, signaling broader revitalization for the neighborhood through 2026.

The End of a Discount Shopping Landmark

The departure of the Saks Off 5th flagship marks the end of an era for New Yorkers. For countless shoppers, the store has been an essential destination for discovering designer fashion at attainable prices. As the final days approach, the store is expected to roll out closing deals and inventory clearances—quietly entering its final chapter after years of serving bargain-savvy fashion lovers.
