On February 28, Dior presented its Fall/Winter 2023 collection at Paris Fashion Week. The new collection presented by Dior is impressive for its strong yet feminine Parisienne look.
The show was held in the Place de la Concorde in Paris. The venue was a colorful and immersive space created by Portuguese artist Joana Vasconcelos. When the show began, the lights of the venue were dimmed, and then huge flowers that covered the ceiling appeared from the light, captivating the audience with a romantic performance.
Creative Director Maria Grazia Chiuri has drawn inspiration for her creations from women who have left their mark on history and become pioneers of feminism and this season, she said she was influenced by Catherine Dior, sister of Christian Dior and known as a French resistance fighter.
True to her words, the new collection features 96 looks that are simple and less ornate but express both the inner “beauty” and “strength” of women in a well-balanced way.
The majority of the collection consisted of basic colors – black, white, and gray – and included basic looks such as midi skirts, argyle-patterned sweaters, small leather gloves, strapless dresses, and oversized wool coats. It was as if the firm determination, dignity, and strength of the women who lived through and survived World War II in the 1950s had been “reconstructed” in a modern way, applied to the image of women living through today.
In addition to this, several looks incorporated bright blues, jet-black reds, and three different leopard prints. The grandeur in the details was amazing: a leather skirt with realistic flowers, a skirt with crystal beads and a matching jacket, and a white skirt with wrinkled skinny ties.
Chiuri also said that the collection was inspired not only by Catherine Dior but also by Juliette Greco andEdith Piaf who were chanson singers and actresses from France. The printed T-shirts in the Dior collection featured the most well-known Piaf song, “Non, je ne regrette rien.”
Just as Christian Dior once sought to bring hope and joy to all women through fashion in the aftermath of a dark and tragic World War II, the collection was a reflection of Ciuri’s desires to encourage and support today’s women by drawing from the history of women in the past was conveyed through it.
