On February 26, Max Mara presented its Fall/Winter 2026 collection at Milan Fashion Week.

A Dialogue Between History and Modernity

This season’s theme, “History and Modernity,” begins with the brand’s heritage and quietly weaves in a neo-medieval atmosphere and a touch of gothic chic. The result is a renewed vision of contemporary womanhood—one that achieves a sophisticated balance between functionality and elegance.

The runway was dominated by a rich, grounded palette of camel, chocolate brown, charcoal, and deep red. Black long gloves and ultra-flat mid-thigh boots punctuated the looks, forming silhouettes that felt serene yet razor-sharp with tension. Cashmere maxi skirts constructed with gores, gently tracing the hip line, created fluid, architectural movement with every step—transforming traditional tailoring techniques into a modern, body-conscious expression.

Butter-soft suede pageboy tunics, skirts detailed with metal rivets, and coats accented with nubuck shoulder patches reinterpreted so-called “Dark Ages” motifs. Rather than heaviness, they conveyed refinement—imbued with the light of modernity. In particular, outerwear defined by architectural shoulder lines powerfully embodied the brand’s DNA.

Materials That Speak of Time

Camel hair, cashmere, alpaca, mohair, fine wool, lustrous double-face fabrics, and plush teddy textures—once again, Max Mara’s carefully selected materials spoke quietly yet persuasively. They reaffirmed the house philosophy that clothing is not merely an expression of luxury, but a lifelong companion—crafted with exceptional craftsmanship and purpose.

An oversized suede coat paired with sunglasses conveyed both authority and anonymity, evoking a modern warrior heading toward the boardroom. A knit bodysuit layered beneath a long coat emphasized the duality of physicality and protection, articulating strength and suppleness in equal measure. Meanwhile, a deep burgundy coat dress embodied this season’s gothic chic, concealing sensuality within its minimal construction.

The Muse: Matilde di Canossa

The collection draws inspiration from Matilde di Canossa, the medieval European ruler whose influence reshaped her era. Governing vast territories from a castle overlooking the brand’s homeland, she was a formidable diplomat and military strategist—a historical figure who carved her own destiny.

“Wise as a serpent, innocent as a dove”—her spirit is projected onto the modern woman, who fights not on the battlefield but in the boardroom. Architectural outerwear, body-tracing knit dresses, and ultra-flat boots do not assert authority through spectacle; instead, they express strength that emanates from within.

Just as 1081 marked a decisive year in Matilde’s fate, 1981 represented a turning point for Max Mara—the year the iconic 101801 coat was born. The empowerment embodied by this coat has since become a symbol for women shaping their own eras. This season’s deep engagement with the archive is not a mere act of citation, but a reconstruction—one that connects history to the future.
