Stella McCartney Named First Industry Ambassador for Central Saint Martins’ New M School

London-based art and design institution Central Saint Martins (CSM) has announced the appointment of Stella McCartney as the first industry ambassador for its newly launched educational program, the M School.

The M School is conceived as a cross-disciplinary initiative that moves beyond traditional boundaries between fashion, jewelry, and textiles. Centered on an integrated approach to materials, manufacturing, ethics, and creativity, the program aims to connect education and industry in a more practical and forward-looking way, positioning itself as a new model for fashion education.

Central Saint Martins as the Point of Origin

McCartney graduated from Central Saint Martins in 1995 and was awarded an honorary degree from the University of the Arts London in 2012. Against this backdrop, her new role at her alma mater carries strong symbolic significance, marking a return to the institution where she first shaped her identity as a designer.

Since founding her brand in 2001, McCartney has consistently rejected the use of animal-derived materials such as fur and feathers. At a time when such a stance was considered unconventional within the luxury sector, she remained committed to her values, continuing to invest in the development of regenerative materials including mycelium-based leather and seaweed-derived sequins. In her Pre-Fall 2026 collection, 98 percent of the lineup was made using responsible materials.

Today, McCartney’s once-radical approach is increasingly aligned with emerging industry standards. At the same time, she has emphasized that the development of sustainable materials and production systems requires continuous investment, and that progress cannot be achieved through the efforts of individual brands alone. Instead, she argues, environmentally responsible practices must be adopted and standardized across the wider fashion industry.

Redefining the Starting Point of Creation

McCartney’s involvement with the M School signals a broader shift in the discourse surrounding sustainable fashion—from one focused primarily on awareness to one centered on education and implementation.

Beyond responding to regulatory pressures or market changes, the initiative highlights the need to redefine the very starting point of creativity. Reimagining fashion education as a driver of systemic change represents a critical turning point for the future of the industry.
