WGSN Names “Radiant Earth” as Its 2028 Color of the Year

WGSN

On March 19, global trend forecasting agency WGSN, together with its color-focused partner Coloro, announced “Radiant Earth” as the Color of the Year for 2028. With its warm, rust- and clay-inspired tone, the shade signals a clear shift away from the cool-toned palettes that have dominated recent years, while also reflecting a broader transformation in societal values.

From “Survival” to “Thriving”

Amid years of global disruption and uncertainty, a shift in consumer mindset is beginning to emerge—from survival toward resilience and flourishing. Radiant Earth was selected as a color that embodies this emotional transition.

Stephanie Barnscher, Senior Color Forecaster at WGSN, explains: “In a world that often feels chaotic, we’re seeing a shift toward emotions like resilience and flourishing. Radiant Earth perfectly anchors this emotional mindset, offering a grounded, reliable neutral that fosters deep-seated trust. For brands, this color helps to create products and environments that feel both reassuringly nostalgic and confidently future-ready.”

Inspired by “Afterglow,” Designed for Versatility

At the core of Radiant Earth is the concept of “afterglow”—the warm, lingering light that remains in the sky after sunset. This imagery defines the essence of the color.

While it pairs naturally with materials such as ceramics and organic textiles, Radiant Earth also brings warmth to high-tech materials and industrial surfaces. Its adaptability across matte, glossy, and iridescent finishes further enhances its versatility, making it suitable for applications ranging from fashion to interiors and product design.

In recent years, WGSN’s color selections—such as “Luminous Blue” and “Transformative Teal”—have leaned toward cooler, more introspective tones. Radiant Earth marks a clear departure from this direction, signaling a move toward more emotive, tactile, and grounded color expressions.

At the same time, contrasting approaches can be seen among other color authorities. For instance, Pantone’s “Cloud Dancer,” a minimalist and ethereal white, represents a more abstract interpretation of neutrality. While differing in tone and expression, both directions share a common intention: to offer a sense of renewal and stability.

A Neutral That Takes Center Stage

Radiant Earth also redefines the role of neutral colors. Rather than blending into the background, it is positioned as an “assertive neutral”—a shade capable of anchoring and defining the identity of a space or product.

As demand grows for colors that provide a sense of grounding in an increasingly uncertain world, Radiant Earth emerges as a compelling candidate for the next era. Bridging memory, emotion, and future outlook, it holds the potential to become a defining color standard as we enter 2028.
