French luxury brand Hermès is hosting an immersive event titled Mystery at the Grooms’ at Pier 36 in New York City. The experience will run from June 19 to 29, 2025. Admission is free, and while reservations are recommended, walk-ins may be accepted depending on availability.
The event revisits Hermès’ origins as a harness workshop established in 1837 and highlights the maison’s 16 métiers through a playfully imaginative installation. The setting is a fictional residence where grooms—caretakers of horses—live with their equine companions. But in this tale, the horses have mysteriously vanished.
Visitors step into the role of detective as they explore the Grooms’ House, searching for hidden horses throughout a series of elaborately designed rooms. The installation consists of six rooms, each with a seven-minute time limit. In every room, up to five horses are cleverly concealed. Participants follow horseshoe-shaped floor markings to navigate from one room to the next.
Guiding players through the experience is the voice of Mr. Honore, a fictional detective named after Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré in Paris, home to the first Hermès store. With his narration, visitors are encouraged to use their imagination and observational skills as they search for the missing herd.
The hidden horses come to life with distinct personalities: one might catch a glimpse of “Ringlet” peeking out from a pile of hay, or find “Clip-Clop” tucked beneath a Rocabar blanket. Others may be discovered printed on a t-shirt, concealed behind a secret door that opens with the right switch, or visible only through a hidden peephole—each clue thoughtfully crafted as part of a whimsical and interactive mystery.
Guests who manage to find all the horses are rewarded with an exclusive Hermès notebook and coloring book.
The installation debuted in Shanghai at the end of last year and is scheduled to travel to Tokyo, Singapore, and Paris.
A refined yet playful “house of riddles” has emerged in the heart of New York. It is a rare opportunity to experience the craftsmanship, creativity, and aesthetic spirit of Hermès up close—an ephemeral playground dedicated to lovers of fashion, art, and imagination.
