Shopify Unveils “Agentic Storefronts,” Enabling Product Sales Within AI Conversations

On December 10, Shopify, one of the world’s largest independent e-commerce platforms, announced the launch of Shopify Agentic Storefronts, a new solution designed to enable next-generation shopping experiences on AI platforms.

With this new feature, users can discover products and complete purchases directly within AI conversational platforms such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Microsoft Copilot. The entire process—from search to checkout—takes place seamlessly within an AI-driven conversation.

Toward Storefronts That Sell Within AI Conversations

By adopting Agentic Storefronts, brands using Shopify can be discovered instantly and accurately across AI platforms. A single setup within the Shopify admin enables product sales wherever AI conversations occur, eliminating the need for individual integrations with each AI platform.

Product information, pricing, and inventory are kept continuously up to date, while transactions are completed through Shopify’s checkout system. This allows brands to accurately track attribution, performance, and customer data for sales generated through AI channels.

From the consumer’s perspective, products are surfaced naturally during conversations, follow-up questions are answered in real time, and purchases can be completed immediately. For brands, this means end-to-end visibility into AI-driven shopping journeys.

Brands Control Where and How They Appear

Shopify emphasizes that selling through AI does not come at the expense of brand identity. With Agentic Storefronts, merchants retain full control over how and where their products appear across AI platforms.

Products are structured using predefined schemas and metafields, allowing AI systems to accurately understand and present them. Through the Knowledge Base App, brands can manage policies, FAQs, and brand voice, ensuring consistent and accurate responses to customer inquiries.

In addition, Shopify’s admin dashboard provides visibility into AI-channel performance, including order attribution, search trends, and the types of questions customers are asking—offering valuable insight into how brands are perceived within AI conversations.

At the core of Agentic Storefronts is Shopify Catalog, which syndicates and surfaces product data across AI chat platforms. Merchants do not need to build custom integrations; instead, they simply select which AI channels they wish to sell on.

Shopify Catalog leverages data from millions of merchants and products to infer categories, extract attributes, consolidate variants, and eliminate duplicates—structuring information so AI systems can interpret it accurately. Pricing and inventory are updated in real time, and performance data is attributed back to the originating AI channel within the Shopify admin.

Customers Remain the Brand’s Relationship

With Agentic Storefronts, merchants retain full ownership of the customer relationship. Checkout can be completed directly within the AI conversation or routed to the brand’s own e-commerce site, while post-purchase experiences and CRM remain fully under the merchant’s control.

All orders flow into the Shopify admin, allowing brands to expand their sales touchpoints without losing direct access to customer data or relationships.
