On February 9, the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) announced the launch of the CFDA & OpenAI Innovation Hub, a new initiative established in partnership with OpenAI. The two-year program is designed to support American designers and fashion brands as they explore the creative and business potential of artificial intelligence through hands-on experimentation.
A defining feature of the program is its fashion-first approach. Rather than being driven by technology alone, the Innovation Hub is rooted in the real-world challenges, creative processes, and business needs of designers. Promising CFDA member brands will be paired with cutting-edge AI tool developers to collaboratively build tools that are practical, responsible, and scalable for long-term use.
Steven Kolb, CEO and President of the CFDA, commented on the significance of the initiative: “The Innovation Hub speaks directly to CFDA’s mission to amplify creative excellence, promote business longevity, and foster positive industry change. When approached responsibly, AI can bridge the gap between fashion and emerging technology and serve as a powerful creative and business tool for American fashion – from design and customer experience to manufacturing, sustainability, accessibility, inclusivity, and marketing.”
Fidji Simo, CEO of Applications at OpenAI, also emphasized AI’s role as a creative enabler:
“AI is an incredible tool for creative empowerment because it helps people turn their imagination into reality faster than ever,” Simo said. “I’ve always had a deep appreciation for fashion as a craft and as an outlet for individual creative expression. Through our work with CFDA, we’re proud to empower designers and brands with tools to drive further innovation, growth, and creativity in the industry.”
Six Brands and Six AI Developers to Participate in the First Year
In its first year, the Innovation Hub will bring together six fashion brands and six AI tool developers in a structured, year-long collaboration. Participating teams will engage in a guided program that includes mentorship, technical support, and funding, while developing pilot projects and proofs of concept using OpenAI tools.
The program will launch in the spring with an Innovation Sprint, during which selected AI developers will present early-stage prototypes focused on fashion-specific use cases. Following a selection and matching process, designers and AI developers will be paired and will continue working together through a series of executive mentorship sessions, leading up to a final Demo Day to be held in New York City.
Over $300,000 in Grants and Unlimited API Credits
To lower financial barriers to innovation, OpenAI will provide more than $300,000 in grants as part of the program. In addition, participating teams will receive unlimited access to OpenAI tools and API credits, creating an environment that allows them to focus on experimentation and development without added economic pressure.
Through the CFDA & OpenAI Innovation Hub, the partners aim to demonstrate that AI is not a replacement for human creativity and craftsmanship, but a tool that can support and extend them. The initiative is positioned as a symbolic effort to guide cultural leadership and creative innovation in American fashion into its next phase.
