Defining an Era
Off-White was founded in 2012 by the late Virgil Abloh, a multidisciplinary creative who blurred the boundaries between streetwear, luxury fashion, art, and design. The brand’s signature quotation marks, diagonal stripes, and zip-tie tags became defining visual codes of the 2010s luxury streetwear movement.
Virgil’s Legacy
Abloh’s tragically early death in November 2021 at age 41 left an irreplaceable void in fashion. His vision for Off-White, which he described as occupying the gray area between black and white, challenged conventional hierarchies in fashion and inspired a generation of young, diverse creatives to see themselves in the luxury world.
Future Direction
LVMH acquired a majority stake in Off-White in 2021. The brand faces the challenge of maintaining relevance and commercial momentum without its visionary founder, a test shared by few other contemporary fashion labels.
