Deep Dive
The Acid Mantle
Skin naturally maintains a slightly acidic pH (4.5-5.5) known as the acid mantle. This acidic environment supports ceramide production, maintains beneficial microbial populations, activates enzymes necessary for barrier function, and creates an inhospitable environment for pathogenic bacteria.
Product pH Impact
Product pH profoundly affects both efficacy and safety. Vitamin C (L-ascorbic acid) requires pH below 3.5 for optimal absorption, AHAs need pH 3-4 for effective exfoliation, while cleansers with high pH (above 7) can disrupt the acid mantle and compromise barrier function.
Formulation Science
Formulators must balance active ingredient requirements with skin compatibility. Buffer systems maintain stable pH over product lifespan, while product sequencing recommendations (applying low-pH products first) help consumers maximize efficacy without irritation.
OSF Perspective
OSF believes pH awareness separates casual skincare users from informed ones — understanding how pH affects product performance enables smarter routine building and product selection.
