L’Oréal, one of the world’s largest beauty companies, has launched a new accelerator program to further drive innovation in the field of sustainability. Over the next five years, the company will invest a total of €100 million to identify, support, and scale groundbreaking technologies that address key sustainability challenges in the beauty industry—from low-carbon solutions and water conservation to alternative ingredients and circular packaging.

The program is part of L’Oréal’s long-term sustainability strategy, L’Oréal for the Future, which outlines science-based targets including a 57% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions and a 28% reduction in certain Scope 3 emissions by 2030. The strategy also includes commitments to cut virgin plastic use by 50% and to ensure that over half of its packaging materials come from recycled or bio-based sources, demonstrating a clear shift toward a circular economy.

The accelerator will support startups, SMEs, and established innovators with ready-to-pilot technologies. Key focus areas include:

  • Low-carbon solutions
  • Alternative ingredients
  • Elimination of fossil-based plastics and plastic waste
  • Low-impact manufacturing processes
  • Water resilience
  • Nature-based solutions
  • Inclusive business models

As part of this initiative, L’Oréal has partnered with the Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership (CISL) to build an integrated support system—from sourcing and piloting new ideas to scaling them across markets.

Ezgi Barcenas, L’Oréal’s Chief Corporate Responsibility Officer, commented on the launch of the program: “As we look towards 2030, we’re committed to be even more intentional and inclusive in the pursuit of sustainable innovations. This accelerator will help address the solution gap and help steer the catalytic adoption of breakthrough technologies. We look forward to partnering with startups and SMEs on low-carbon solutions, alternative ingredients and packaging materials, low-impact processes, and resilience and adaptation efforts.”

This new program marks the next phase in L’Oréal’s journey, building on a foundation of environmental initiatives and technological innovation. From carbon-neutral operations powered by renewable energy to impact investments through its nature regeneration fund, and the development of alternative and bio-based materials, the company has addressed sustainability challenges from multiple angles. With this new initiative centered on collaboration, L’Oréal is positioning itself once again at the forefront of industry transformation, committed to advancing beauty while rebuilding a more sustainable future for the planet.
