Heritage & Origins
Tod’s traces its origins to a small cobbler’s workshop in the Marche region of Italy, established by Filippo Della Valle in the early 1920s. The family business was transformed by his grandson Diego Della Valle, who in the late 1970s created the iconic Gommino driving shoe, distinguished by its rubber pebble sole. This single design catapulted the brand to international recognition and established Tod’s as a symbol of Italian casual luxury.
Design Philosophy & Innovation
Tod’s embodies the concept of understated Italian elegance, creating leather goods and footwear that prioritize exceptional materials and artisanal craftsmanship over conspicuous branding. The brand’s products are handcrafted in Italian workshops, with each Gommino shoe requiring over one hundred individual steps to produce. Tod’s represents a philosophy of quiet luxury that values substance over spectacle.
Cultural Impact & Legacy
Tod’s has become synonymous with Italian dolce vita lifestyle and has been a significant patron of Italian cultural heritage, notably funding the restoration of Rome’s Colosseum. The Tod’s Group also encompasses luxury brands Hogan and Roger Vivier. Under the stewardship of the Della Valle family, Tod’s continues to champion Italian artisanal excellence in a rapidly changing luxury landscape.
