On June 22, Dior presented its summer 2024 men’s collection.

The show was held at Ecole Militaire in the heart of Paris, where a futuristic metallic stage was prepared. When the show began, the venue was enveloped in darkness. With background music that sounded as if something was coming from outer space, the floor of the illuminated catwalk opened like a window. The next moment, models appeared from the basement all at once on a lift to the runway, an impressive opening to the show.

The brand’s artistic director Kim Jones has always reflected inspirations from previous designers and artists in his collections. This season’s inspirations were Yves Saint-Laurent, Gianfranco Ferré, and Marc Bohan, and the collection reinterpreted the silhouettes they created, fused, and developed them with Jones’ own suggestions.

Elements of tailoring inspired by Yves Saint-Laurent, who became Maison’s designer at only 21 years old after Monsieur Dior’s death, were reflected in details such as volumes, vents, pleats, and necklines. In addition, jackets and vests were embroidered with glamorous metallic embroidery reminiscent of Gianfranco Ferré’s time, while soft textures showed the influence of Marc Bohan. The leopard pattern, inspired by Dior’s muse Mitzah Bricard, was also reproduced on saddlebags, shorts, and sporty vests.

In this season’s collection, which seems to harmonize the characteristics of several such designers of the past, the core essence that connects Yves Saint-Laurent, Gianfranco Ferré, and Marc Bohan was Christian Dior’s “Cannage.”

The “Cannage” pattern was designed by Monsieur Dior based on the woven rattan chairs in which guests sat at his first salon show in 1947, and is today’s signature motif of the Maison.  The “Cannage” was incorporated into many items, including crew-neck knits peeking out from inside jackets, long coats with a slightly dropped shoulder style, and sleeveless pieces paired with crisp half pants.

Every look in the collection breathes light, playful modernity, functional and carefree luxe. Menswear basics such as Harrington jackets, polo shirts, crew necks, and cardigans were infused with the softness and glamour of womenswear, with tweed, embroidery, and bijoux embellishments, and fancy tweeds on tailored jackets.

The color palette was a balance between formal and casual, with muted pastels and vibrant neon colors coexisting. Soothing colors such as black, gray, beige, and ivory are the base colors of the garments, bringing elegance and relaxation, while bright neon colors such as yellow, pink, lime, and blue are the accent colors.

The year 2023 marks the fifth anniversary of Kim Jones’ appointment as Dior’s men’s artistic director. As if to congratulate it, Jones sublimated the essence of womenswear cultivated by the Maison into menswear and presented a spectacular collection.

On the day of the show, the front row was filled with a star-studded lineup of celebrities, including fashion model Winnie Harlow, actress Demi Moore, “Game of Thrones” actress Gwendoline Christie and singer Cha Eun-wo. Pharrell Williams, who made his spectacular debut for Louis Vuitton a few days before the show, was also in attendance along with his son Rocket and wife Helen Lasichanh.
