Fragrance Composition

Beauty Science

The structured architecture of a perfume or scented product, organized into top notes (initial impression, 15-30 minutes), middle/heart notes (the fragrance's core character, 2-4 hours), and base notes (long-lasting foundation, 6+ hours), created by master perfumers using hundreds of natural and synthetic aromatic materials.

Deep Dive

Note Structure

Fragrance composition follows a pyramidal structure. Top notes (citrus, light florals, herbs) provide the initial impression and evaporate quickly. Heart notes (rose, jasmine, spices) form the fragrance’s character and emerge as tops fade. Base notes (woods, musk, amber, vanilla) provide depth and longevity, anchoring the composition.

Raw Materials

Perfumers work with a palette of thousands of materials — natural essences (essential oils, absolutes, CO2 extracts) and synthetic molecules (aroma chemicals that replicate natural scents or create entirely new olfactory experiences). The most complex fine fragrances may contain 100+ individual materials.

Creative Process

Creating a fragrance requires years of olfactory training and an encyclopedic knowledge of aromatic materials. Master perfumers at major fragrance houses develop compositions through iterative refinement, often creating dozens of variations before finalizing a formula that meets a brand’s creative brief.

OSF Perspective

OSF views fragrance composition as one of beauty's most rarefied art forms — invisible, ephemeral, and profoundly personal, perfumery transforms chemistry into emotion.
