Hermès has opened its 25th leather goods workshop in Loupes, Gironde, near Bordeaux, France. The inauguration ceremony was held on April 10, attended by Executive Chairman Axel Dumas alongside local officials. At a time when the broader industry is scaling back investments, the move underscores the maison’s continued commitment to expanding its production capacity.

The new site, “Maroquinerie de Loupes,” currently employs around 140 artisans and is expected to grow to approximately 260 within the coming months. The workshop will primarily focus on the production of the iconic Kelly bag, as well as other leather goods, including the Constance and Bride de Cour. It marks the second production site in the Gironde region, following the Maroquinerie de Guyenne in Saint-Vincent-de-Paul, which opened in 2021. Together, the two sites form Hermès’ eighth regional leather goods hub.

Architecture Reflecting Sustainability

The new facility embodies a strong commitment to sustainability through its architectural design. Built using low-carbon concrete foundations, lightweight timber structures, and bio-based materials, the workshop features exposed pine framing as a central design element. It is equipped with geothermal heating, solar panels, and a rainwater harvesting system, all aimed at reducing environmental impact in both energy and water consumption.

Craftsmanship at the Core

Artisan recruitment is supported by Hermès’ in-house training institution, the École Hermès des savoir-faire. The program, which is open to all aspiring leather craftsmen, is both free and paid, offering an 18-month training course. All artisans complete this program before joining the production line, reinforcing the brand’s long-standing commitment to craftsmanship.

Three Additional Workshops Planned

The opening of the Loupes workshop forms part of Hermès’ long-term production expansion strategy. Through official announcements, the company has outlined its plans to continue developing new leather goods workshops across France.

At present, three new sites are planned: Les Andelys in the Eure department of Normandy, Charleville-Mézières in the Ardennes, and Colombelles in Calvados. Following the launch of the Loupes facility, these locations are expected to be the next workshops to come online.

Prior to Loupes, the most recent workshop opened in Riom in September 2024, where Birkin and Constance bags are produced.

Sustained Growth Amid Industry Headwinds

This expansion strategy stands out at a time when the luxury sector is adopting a more cautious stance. While LVMH has experienced notable stock declines over a certain period amid weakening demand, Hermès reported a 5.5% increase in revenue, reaching €16 billion in 2025—demonstrating resilience despite several quarters of slowdown across the industry.

By manufacturing its leather goods primarily in France and maintaining full control over the entire production process—from sourcing raw materials to final artisanal finishing—the company continues to reinforce its pricing power and exclusivity.
