L’Oréal Luxe, the luxury division of L’Oréal Groupe, announced on May 12 an exclusive partnership with DATALAND, a new AI-focused art museum set to open in Los Angeles this summer.

Summary

  • L’Oréal Luxe announced an exclusive partnership with AI art museum DATALAND in Los Angeles
  • The project includes 12 rainforest-inspired fragrances developed in collaboration with Refik Anadol Studio
  • The inaugural exhibition “Machine Dreams: Rainforest” combines AI-generated visuals with responsive scent experiences
  • DATALAND is scheduled to officially open in Los Angeles on June 20, 2026

Created in collaboration with media artist Refik Anadol and Refik Anadol Studio, the project introduces a series of 12 rainforest-inspired fragrances designed to function as part of an immersive, omni-sensory art experience combining AI-generated visuals, responsive environments, and scent technology.

Co-founded by Refik Anadol and artist Efsun Erkılıç, DATALAND is positioned as the world’s first museum dedicated to AI arts. The 25,000-square-foot institution, featuring five galleries and a 1.5-billion-pixel visual system, is scheduled to open in Los Angeles on June 20, 2026.

The museum will debut with “Machine Dreams: Rainforest,” an exhibition that merges AI-generated rainforest imagery with custom-developed fragrances created by L’Oréal Luxe. The scents will be diffused throughout the space using responsive smart diffuser technology designed to react to both the artworks and visitors’ movements, transforming fragrance into a living component of the installation itself.

Among the featured creations are “Scent of Data” and “Scent of Rain.” According to the company, “Scent of Data” uses clean musks and aldehydes to evoke the pulsation of algorithms and machine intelligence, while “Scent of Rain” recreates the atmosphere of rain-soaked earth through petrichor accords, patchouli, and headspace-captured natural elements.

Through the collaboration, L’Oréal Luxe is positioning fragrance beyond the traditional product category and into the realm of cultural and experiential storytelling. The project reflects a broader shift across the luxury industry, where brands are increasingly investing in immersive technologies and emotionally driven consumer experiences that bridge art, technology, and sensory engagement.

Cyril Chapuy, President of L’Oréal Luxe, said: “I have always deeply admired Refik Anadol’s visionary artistic work. I am incredibly proud that L’Oréal Luxe is collaborating with him on DATALAND placing olfaction at the very center of the museum and pushing the boundaries of unexpected Fragrance creation.”

Karine Lebret, Fragrance Métier International Director at L’Oréal Groupe, added: “Fragrance is the ultimate language of emotion, a direct bridge to the soul that transcends reason. In response to Refik and Efsun’s vision, our L’Oréal Fragrance Designers have shattered traditional boundaries to craft unfiltered sensory truths. Within DATALAND, we unveil the technical precision of our Métier through ‘immersive scents’ to leave a powerful, indelible emotional imprint.”

Refik Anadol also commented on the collaboration, stating: “This collaboration with L’Oréal Luxe is a fascinating breakthrough. Together, we are pushing the boundaries of what art can be. By combining artworks with a unique fragrance model, we are no longer just visualizing data, we are breathing life into it. I am thrilled to share this unique dialogue between human sensory experiences and machine intelligence with the world.”

In recent years, luxury brands have accelerated investments in AI, immersive environments, and experiential retail as part of broader efforts to redefine emotional engagement and cultural relevance. Within fragrance specifically, the category has increasingly evolved beyond traditional advertising and packaging into spatial storytelling and sensory-driven experiences.

Against that backdrop, the collaboration between L’Oréal Luxe and DATALAND signals how fragrance may continue expanding into new forms of digital and cultural expression — particularly as AI reshapes the future of luxury experiences.
