On June 30, Marc Jacobs unveiled his richly composed “Runway 2026 Collection” at the New York Public Library, presenting just 19 looks packed with theatrical and poetic impact.

The show notes were strikingly brief, yet profoundly pointed: “Beauty. A quality or combination of qualities that gives pleasure to the mind or senses and is often associated with properties such as harmony of form or color, proportion, and authenticity.”

Taking this abstract phrase as his conceptual anchor, Jacobs wove together threads of historical memory and contemporary expression, deconstructing and reimagining the notion of beauty through his own distinct visual language.

This season’s looks extended the doll-like feminine aesthetic seen in the previous collection. Billowing sleeves, sculptural skirts with accentuated hips, and exaggerated bustles evoked the silhouettes of the 19th-century Victorian era—yet nothing felt like period costume. Rather, these were deeply imbued with Marc Jacobs’ wit and interpretive sensibility.

One of the most emblematic looks combined a lavender lace top with military-inspired cargo pants—an intentional clash of past and present, softness and utility. Throughout the collection, the unifying theme was Jacobs’s relentless exploration of proportion. Lavender, ivory, coral pink, coffee brown, and jet black—subtle gradients of color wrapped around forms that were magnified, reshaped, and even distorted. Sleeves ballooned, hips swelled like sculptures, and bodices billowed with volume, blurring the contours of the human body.

Despite the dramatic silhouettes, there was no sense of heaviness. Light fabrics, towering platform heels reminiscent of doll shoes, and an overarching air of freedom and weightlessness gave the collection a surprising sense of ease.

Delicate floral prints layered over lace created dresses that seemed to hold spring itself within their folds. This season’s trendy polka dots also made playful appearances, layered with diagonal stripes or sheer textiles, adding visual contrast and movement.

Ribbons were a defining motif throughout the collection, styled as oversized headpieces or tied at the back and waist, providing a subtle yet steady rhythm, like a basso continuo grounding the ensemble.

The brief five-minute show closed with a dramatic final look: a voluminous black Victorian-inspired gown adorned with a giant plaid bow. The full skirt, crafted from light-absorbing silk taffeta, trailed in sweeping waves, with delicate floral lace peeking through the hem. It was at once majestic and fragile, classical yet futuristic. In this silhouette, where past and present, theatricality and reality intertwined, Marc Jacobs revealed the essence of his creative mastery.

At a time when commercial viability and functionality dominate the fashion conversation, Marc Jacobs continues to resist the current. He remains, above all, a storyteller—one who confronts the idea of beauty with both provocation and delicacy, and entrusts that vision to the medium of clothing.
