Innovation Through Material
Issey Miyake founded his design studio in Tokyo in 1970, pioneering an approach to fashion that centered on the relationship between the body and fabric. His revolutionary exploration of pleating, folding, and material technology produced garments that were simultaneously functional and sculptural, challenging Western conventions about how clothes should be constructed.
Pleats Please
The Pleats Please line, launched in 1993, introduced Miyake’s revolutionary heat-press pleating technique to a broader audience. The lightweight, wrinkle-resistant garments became a global phenomenon, offering a new paradigm for comfortable, packable luxury. The technology-driven approach also produced the iconic Bao Bao geometric bag.
Enduring Philosophy
Following Miyake’s passing in 2022, the brand continues under creative director Satoshi Kondo, maintaining the founder’s philosophy of making design that enriches everyday life. The brand’s fragrances, particularly L’Eau d’Issey, remain major commercial successes.
