Master of Black
Yohji Yamamoto established his label in Tokyo in 1972, bringing a radical new perspective to fashion that challenged Western conventions of beauty, proportion, and color. His mastery of draping, his poetic use of black, and his celebration of imperfection created a visual language that influenced generations of designers worldwide.
Paris Revolution
Yamamoto’s 1981 Paris debut, alongside Rei Kawakubo of Comme des Garcons, shocked and divided the fashion world with oversized, deconstructed garments that the press initially derided but which ultimately transformed the course of fashion design. His work occupies the space between fashion and philosophy.
Enduring Influence
At over 80 years old, Yamamoto continues to design and show in Paris, maintaining his uncompromising artistic vision. His Y-3 collaboration with Adidas, launched in 2002, was a pioneering luxury-sportswear partnership that predated the current era of fashion-sport convergence by over a decade.
