On May 1, the French luxury maison Dior announced the appointment of Japanese actress Yuumi Kawai as its new global ambassador. The appointment is tied to the collections led by Creative Director Jonathan Anderson, positioning Kawai as a figure who embodies the maison’s evolving creative vision.
Rising Recognition in Cinema
Kawai made her debut in 2019 and quickly gained attention after receiving newcomer awards for her performances in It’s a Summer Film! and A Balance. She has since continued to build her career, winning Best Actress at the 48th Japan Academy Film Prize for her leading role in Ano Koto.
Her international recognition has also grown, with Desert of Namibia receiving the FIPRESCI Prize at the 77th Cannes Film Festival. More recently, she has appeared in notable works such as Renoir and Travels and Days. With her strong acting ability, quiet presence, and emotionally nuanced performances, she is now widely regarded as one of the most promising talents in contemporary Japanese cinema.

Notable ambassadors include Jisoo of BLACKPINK, Jimin of BTS, and actor Robert Pattinson. In addition, figures such as Anya Taylor-Joy and Willow Smith are active as ambassadors, particularly within the beauty category.
In recent years, the maison has also expanded its focus toward emerging talent, appointing next-generation actors such as Ever Anderson and Sophie Wilde. This reflects a broader strategy aimed at engaging younger audiences while strengthening Dior’s global positioning.
