H&M x Stella McCartney Unveil 20th Anniversary Collection

H&M x Stella McCartney

On April 16, Swedish fashion brand H&M unveiled the full looks of its latest collaboration with Stella McCartney in New York. Set to launch on May 7, the collection marks the 20th anniversary of the duo’s first partnership and reflects on McCartney’s 25-year journey as a designer.

From Origins to the Present

The first collaboration between Stella McCartney and H&M debuted in November 2005. It was H&M’s second-ever designer collaboration and is widely remembered as a landmark project that helped define the potential of mass and luxury intersections within the fashion industry.

Two decades later, this new collection goes beyond a simple anniversary release. Instead, it presents a curated reflection of McCartney’s design legacy, translating her forward-thinking, rule-breaking vision into both apparel and accessories.

A Dialogue Between Past and Present

At the heart of the collection lies a fusion of playful, iconic pieces drawn from McCartney’s early archives and her contemporary signatures. Oversized shirts, fluid trench coats, sharp tailoring, and embellished prints and slogan tops form the backbone of the lineup.

Stella McCartney described the collection as follows: “This collection is a journey through my fashion history. It is a true mix of current classics and some of my old favorites that showcase my first forays into fashion and the development of my signatures. It’s playful, strong, sparkling, joyful, refined.”

The Falabella Chain as a Thread of Identity

The collection features a wide range of standout items. Rib-knit dresses and tops incorporate McCartney’s signature Falabella chain at the neckline, while a long white gown with cape-like sleeves creates a dramatic circular silhouette.

Sparkling partywear, separates, and denim are also included, alongside mesh dresses and tops in a bold archival cherry print. A white mini tee adorned with studs spelling “Rock Royalty” delivers a strong sense of nostalgia, evoking McCartney’s early design ethos.

Accessories are equally prominent. The bag offering includes six styles, ranging from small branded shoulder bags to oversized totes and a timeless chocolate-toned bag with a chain-detail strap. The Falabella chain appears throughout, extending into necklaces, earrings, and even loafers. Recycled metal is used across these pieces, finished in mixed tones for a contemporary edge.

A Consistent Commitment to Sustainability

Material selection reflects McCartney’s long-standing environmental philosophy. The collection incorporates recycled materials, organic cotton, and RWS-certified wool, alongside innovative coated materials derived from industrial corn and recycled vegetable oil.

This consistent integration of sustainability into a mass-market collaboration underscores McCartney’s role not only as a designer, but also as an activist.

Campaign: The Meaning Behind “&Stella”

The campaign, shot in London by photographer Sam Rock, features Reneé Rapp, Angelina Kendall, and Adwoa Aboah. It captures a mood that is at once playful and effortless, nostalgic yet forward-looking.

The overarching tagline, “&Stella,” runs throughout the campaign. Reinterpreted through phrases such as “&Here &Now” and “&Me &You,” it conveys ideas of connection, care, and a way of being that transcends past, present, and future.

Ann-Sofie Johansson of H&M commented on the collaboration: “Stella has always had a bold vision for fashion, and this collection tracks her journey from a young, rule-breaking voice to a master of timeless design. Every single piece in the collection is desirable and tells a unique and bold story.”

A 20-year milestone collaboration between two forces that helped shape the designer collaboration movement, this project carries significance beyond nostalgia. As both parties revisit their shared legacy, the collection offers a renewed perspective on the democratization of luxury—bringing McCartney’s sustainable philosophy to a wider global audience upon its release on May 7.
