Caramel: Born From a Desire for Something Different

Eva Karayiannis founded Caramel in London in 1999. At the time, as a mother of young children, she felt the market lacked the kind of children’s wear she was searching for.

Reflecting on that experience, Karayiannis said: “Everything was very classic, with puff sleeves, gathered waists, and everything came in pink or blue. On the other end, there were tracksuits and not much else.”

The first Caramel store, opened in London’s Brompton Cross, quickly resonated with parents who wanted children’s clothing that reflected their own lifestyle and aesthetic sensibilities. Over time, the brand developed a loyal following and a distinctive identity.

Today, Caramel is recognized for its meticulous attention to materials, proportion, and construction, earning a reputation that extends beyond children’s wear into women’s wear.

A Collection That Combines Two Creative Visions

The collaboration was developed through close cooperation between ZARA’s design and product teams and Caramel. Founder Eva Karayiannis was involved throughout the entire creative process—from fabric selection and garment construction to styling and visual direction—ensuring that Caramel’s signature aesthetic remained central to the collection.

Built around the idea of a modern wardrobe, the collection prioritizes versatility, comfort, and practicality. Drawing inspiration from uniforms and menswear, it incorporates refined fabrics and a muted contemporary color palette.

Karayiannis explained the philosophy behind the designs: “I want to create clothes that children can live in and make their own. What has always mattered to me is giving them the freedom to express their personalities and be themselves. They can wear mismatched socks if they want to and enjoy dressing in their own way!”

Expanding Beyond Childrenswear

In addition to children’s wear, the collection includes a limited capsule offering of womenswear and accessories.
