All About MET GALA 2024 |Concerns raised by strikes around the venue and Tiktok’s participation

The Met Gala 2024 will be held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City on May 6 at 6 p.m. with great fanfare.

The Met Gala is the opening charity event to celebrate The Costume Institute’s annual special exhibition, organized by Vogue’s Editor-in-Chief Anna Wintour.

The event is invitation-only, and approximately 600 celebrities, fashion icons, and luminaries will gather at the Metropolitan Museum of Art on the day of the event. Reportedly, tickets start at $30,000 per person, and seat fees are estimated at approximately $275,000. Proceeds from the event will be used to fund the activities of the Costume Institute.

The Theme, Dress Code, and Guests for 2024

Guests attending the Met Gala are given a dress code each year based on the exhibition’s theme, and the world pays close attention to the red-carpet outfits of the guests.

The dress code for this year’s gala is “Garden of Time,” inspired by the J.G. Ballard short story of the same name. The event will be followed by the opening of the 2024 exhibition “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion” at the Metropolitan Museum of Art on May 10.

The exhibition will feature 250 historically significant pieces that have lain dormant in the Institute’s permanent collection. It will include works by renowned designers such as Christian Dior, Yves Saint Laurent, Elsa Schiaparelli, and Hubert de Givenchy, as well as its original designs.

Co-hosts leading the Met Gala 2024 with Anna Wintour are Zendaya, Bad Bunny, Chris Hemsworth, and Jennifer Lopez. Honorary hosts will be Jonathan Anderson, creative director of Loewe, and Shou Zi Chew, CEO of TikTok, the event’s lead sponsor.

The list of other celebrities who will appear on the red carpet has not been officially revealed at this time. However, BLACK PINK’s Jennie Kim and ROSÉ have been in New York for the past few days, so their attendance is considered a strong possibility.

Taylor Swift and Travis Kelc, the hottest power couple in the world, will reportedly not attend this year’s Met Gala. Swift is currently preparing for her “Eras Tour” in Paris and is extremely busy preparing and rehearsing for her European tour.

Emerging Concerns for the Met Gala 2024

Behind the scenes of this spectacular event, some concerns have been raised.

One of these is that the lead sponsor of the Met Gala 2024 is Tiktok, its Chinese parent, ByteDanc. TikTok is now seen as a threat to U.S. national security and the U.S. has passed a law giving ByteDance, “nine months to sell the app or see it banned.” With such a movement to get rid of TikTok in the U.S., it is a very complicated situation for a fashion event representing the U.S. to team up with TikTok to host an event. Will Anna Wintour appear on the red carpet with Shou Zi Chew, CEO of TikTok?

In addition, large-scale protests by pro-Palestinian and pro-Israel groups have intensified in New York City over the past few days, so it is expected that Palestinian-supporting protesters will gather at Hunter College in Manhattan on the evening of the 6th. It is unclear whether these protesters will head to the Metropolitan Museum of Art and disrupt this major event, but in the past, Gaza protesters in New York have been willing to disrupt such prominent events.

Furthermore, the union members of Condé Nast, the parent company of Vogue, are turning their blades against Met Gala. The Condé Nast Union, a labor union of employees of Condé Nast-owned media companies, has been on strike for some time over the company’s workforce reduction plans and working conditions.

On May 5, the union members posted a video on Condé Nast Union’s Instagram, X, and other social media sites, announcing their names and calling for just contract negotiations. At the same time, they also mentioned that they would strike at the Met Gala 2024.

The Met Gala 2024 will be streamed live on Vogue.com beginning at 6 p.m. Eastern time. The red carpet will also be simultaneously streamed on Vogue’s TikTok and YouTube.
