Gucci Presents “The Art of Silk”: A New Chapter Rooted in Its Archival Heritage

Gucci

The Italian luxury house Gucci has unveiled “The Art of Silk,” a project that brings a new perspective to the brand’s rich tradition of silk craftsmanship. The initiative reinterprets archival scarves through a contemporary lens, reconnecting Gucci’s heritage with the present.

The scarf selection was curated by Artistic Director Demna. Drawn from the Gucci Archive in Florence, each design preserves the original’s essence while delicately and richly expressing the evolving potential of the silk scarf as a creative medium.

The Collection

The lineup features pieces titled “Your Majesty,” “Double Trouble,” “Morso D’Oro,” “Giardino di Seta,” “Lungomare,” “Hard-Wear,” “Salon Privé,” and “Il Gattino.” Two additional limited-edition Flora print designs have been created to commemorate the opening of the David Geffen Galleries, the new wing of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA). Together, the scarves evoke the visual richness of Gucci’s founding era through iconic motifs including Flora, Animalia, and Nautical themes.

Sustainability and Italian Silk Revival

The limited-edition Flora scarves are crafted from the highest-quality silk sourced from southern Italy, produced in collaboration with Nido di Seta and Ongetta. Based in Calabria, this partnership supports the revival of a once-thriving regional silk industry. The initiative encompasses organic mulberry cultivation, the regeneration of disused land, and the creation of new employment opportunities. Renewable energy is used throughout the silk production process, and cooperation among small-scale farming networks underpins a sustainable approach to artisanal craft.

Art World Connections

In a continuation of Gucci’s longstanding ties with the global art community, the LACMA-edition scarves will be available exclusively at the museum’s shop and at the Gucci Beverly Hills flagship store. Additionally, Gucci is deepening its collaboration with the Florence Academy of Fine Arts (Accademia delle Belle Arti di Firenze). Students at the academy have created ten paintings inspired by the scarf designs, which will be exhibited at the Gucci Beverly Hills boutique. The partnership also includes scholarship funding for the next generation of creative talent.

A Continuing Legacy

“The Art of Silk” originally launched in 2025. Its first chapter featured an advertising campaign starring Julia Garner, photographed by Steven Meisel, alongside the publication of the art book “Gucci: The Art of Silk” in partnership with Assouline. A subsequent initiative titled “90 × 90” invited nine international artists to reinterpret five archival themes — Flora, Animalia, Nautical, Equestrian, and GG Pattern — positioning the silk scarf as a canvas for contemporary artistic dialogue.

Founded in Florence in 1921, Gucci operates under President and CEO Francesca Bellettini and Artistic Director Demna. The house is part of Kering, the global luxury group.
