"Fear is not my enemy - it is a necessary companion to creativity, authenticity, integrity, and life."
– MARC JACOBS
On February 3, Marc Jacobs unveiled its Spring/Summer 2025 collection at the New York Public Library, ahead of New York Fashion Week. Titled “Courage,” the show visualized the atmosphere of contemporary society through Jacobs’ signature lens of exaggeration.
Expanding Silhouettes, Overwhelming Presence
The first impression of the collection was one of “distorted reality, with disproportionate silhouettes.” The shoulders were dramatically extended, while the waist was tightly cinched, creating a stark contrast with voluminous bottoms that deconstructed the human silhouette. Flared skirts and oversized pants exuded an assertive presence as if the garments themselves were making a statement.
Among the most striking pieces were dresses with cloud-like floating volumes. A vivid color palette featuring bold reds, deep burgundy, and metallic purple enhanced the illusion that the models were adorned with towering sculptures. Particularly notable were the oversized bows covering the front and cocoon-like coats enveloping the body, amplifying the collection’s visual impact and sense of grandeur.
Experimental Spirit within Minimalism
For several seasons, Jacobs has been deconstructing the traditions of American sportswear and reconstructing them into experimental designs. This season was no exception. With exaggerated pant silhouettes, thickly knitted wool sweaters, and smooth felt textures, the collection blurred the line between everyday wear and avant-garde art pieces.
Structured tops, with their sharp, linear forms, juxtaposed fluid drapes, creating a deliberate sense of imbalance—an element that embodies Jacobs’ edgy and playful aesthetic.
The Art of Accessories and Styling
Accessories played a crucial role in highlighting the collection’s theme. Models appeared as though they had stepped out of another dimension, carrying distorted leather bags and wearing platform shoes with curved, hoof-like toes. Their faces were adorned with bold red dots, evoking the expressionless features of dolls.
Through these visual elements, Jacobs conveyed not only a transformation of clothing but also a reimagining of the human form itself.

Creativity Beyond Fear
Marc Jacobs has consistently demonstrated that his runway shows are not merely commercial presentations but platforms for conceptual exploration and fashion as an art form. His statement, “Fear is not my enemy – it is a necessary companion to creativity,” serves as the foundation of this collection.
Last year, Jacobs was invited by Anna Wintour to serve as a guest editor for Vogue US. While the extent of its influence on his designs remains uncertain, the experience of working in a fashion magazine may have broadened his perspective. It seems to have further refined his ability to balance conceptual artistry with wearability.
With extreme silhouettes, powerful visual impact, and an unwavering pursuit of fashion’s essence, Marc Jacobs’ Spring/Summer 2025 collection presents a world of fearless creativity that lies beyond hesitation.
