On April 20, the French luxury maison Moynat opened its first boutique in Italy at 3 Via Montenapoleone in Milan. Located within a 16th-century palazzo, the space serves as a new milestone for the house, set against a backdrop rich in historical and cultural significance.

Unveiled during Milan Design Week 2026, the project also reaffirms Moynat’s long-standing relationship with design and art.

Summary

  • Moynat opens its first Italian boutique on Via Montenapoleone in Milan
  • The opening coincides with Milan Design Week and the presentation of the art project “The Trunk”
  • Hall Haus, Marianna Ladreyt, and Michael Samuels participated in the project
  • The installations reinterpret the trunk through the themes of gathering, play, and memory

Three Perspectives Redefining the Trunk

To mark the opening, Moynat invited three creatives—Hall Haus, Marianna Ladreyt, and Michael Samuels—to present installations centered around the theme of the trunk.

Hall Haus drew inspiration from sound system culture rooted in hip-hop block parties, reimagining the trunk as a device for gathering and connection. The work merges Moynat’s signature “M” monogram with Hall Haus’ graphic language, creating a visual intersection of distinct identities. Stacked trunks form structures reminiscent of speaker towers, transforming the trunk from a symbol of travel into a medium that visualizes collective energy and community.

Marianna Ladreyt focused on the diverse shapes and intricate details found in the maison’s archival trunks, translating them into an interactive installation that engages the body. Large modular blocks, covered in upcycled inflatable materials, reinterpret elements such as handles, metal fittings, and curved silhouettes in a soft and tactile form. Visitors are invited to touch, move, and rearrange the pieces, shifting the trunk’s role from a functional travel object into a space of play and immersive spatial experience.

Michael Samuels presents the trunk as a sculptural and architectural entity, detached from its original function. Using 1960s cases and vintage furniture, he constructs vertical compositions that resemble towering structures—almost like monuments of accumulated memory. In this context, “travel” is no longer understood as movement, but as a layering of time and memory. The trunk evolves into an archival object that embodies traces of human experience.

From Craftsmanship to Artistic Expression

Founded in 1849 as a trunk maker, Moynat has long been associated with travel culture. Innovations such as waterproof canvas trunks, limousine trunks, and its signature lock system are emblematic of the house’s heritage.

This project revisits that foundational object—the trunk—and expands it into the realms of design and art. Moving beyond product, Moynat positions the trunk as a cultural and conceptual entity, further defining its creative identity in a contemporary context.
